At OLA it is our aim to help students on a journey of self-discovery. Through Years 8 to 13 students have organized and planned careers sessions designed to help them think about skills and qualities they have or would like to develop, and areas of interest which they might like to pursue as a job role or career.
In Year 8 the focus will be wide and varied as students begin to think about the areas they might wish to pursue and their own strengths and areas for development. Moving towards GCSE and A level the subject focus will become tighter and more important as plans become sharper and students have more clarity about their future. Throughout this process we aim to support the student by helping them take practical steps towards securing their future career plans.
The Career Guidance Programme combines lead lectures, group discussions, on line assessments and one to one meetings with careers experts. The focus will be on strengthening the student’s skills and qualities, developing employability skills, CV and letter of application writing and interview techniques. There is also an annual Abingdon Careers Convention which students are invited to attend from year 10 upwards. In year 10 we also have a week long work experience giving students the opportunity to learn first-hand from industry professionals.
Supporting the delivery of the Career Guidance Programme are teachers, tutors and parents as well as selected suppliers of career education, information, advice, and guidance.
Mr Cez Sissons serves as Head of Career Guidance, responsible for designing, delivering and evaluating the Career Guidance Programme. He is always interested to hear your views.
