Maths

In the Sixth Form we offer both A Level Mathematics and A level Further Mathematics. These are normally taught by one or two teachers, covering different aspects of the courses and are examined at the end of the Upper Sixth year.

As well as the A Levels we also enter our students in the UKMT Senior Mathematics Challenge and the Mathematics Team Challenge.

We follow the examination specifications as described below.

      1. OCR A Level Mathematics Specification A, Code H240

      a) Aims

The A Level Mathematics Specification A qualification has been developed to provide students with a coherent course of study to develop mathematical understanding. Students are encouraged to think, act and communicate mathematically, providing them with the skills to analyse situations in Mathematics and elsewhere.

      b) Description

There is an increased emphasis on Mathematical argument, language and proof, problem solving and modelling.

The assessment consists of three 2 hour papers: Pure Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics, and Pure Mathematics and Mechanics, each with a mixture of short and long questions.

      2. OCR A Level Further Mathematics Specification A, Code H245
