Charity Work

The pupils at OLA are actively encouraged to realise their responsibilities to those less fortunate than they are. Through the PSHE and RE curriculum, the children come to understand the importance of sharing their good fortune with people from a wide background of need, both nationally and internationally.

Throughout the year the school supports a number of charities. Some of these are occasionally helped, such as The Colitus and Crohn's Disease Society or the Marfan Society, while others are more regularly helped. These include CAFOD, St. Vincent's School for the Blind, Blue Peter Appeal, Holy Childhood, The Diocesan's Children's Trust, The Children's Society, Save the Children and many more! Generally the amount collected each year by the children is in the region of £3000.00, but often this is increased by supporting one-off causes.

We are currently supporting a girl in Uganda with school fees and other associated costs. The children often write to her and in return we receive regular letters, updates and school reports.

The children, through School Council, often organise various fund raising events such as cake sales, non-uniform days, raffles and collections. In Year Six the pupils organise an annual charity effort which involves car washing, running various stalls and games.

The proceeds of all fund raising are often divided between children’s charities of the pupils’ choice.

We bi-annually support the work of the NSPCC and in 2010 the school raised £2500 for this very worthy cause.
