Science

scienceIn Year 7 pupils are taught about living cells, the environment, acids, alkalis, forces and electricity. There is a lot of practical work and the pupils learn how scientists carry out investigations and how to present their findings. Pupils will use the bunsen burners to heat chemicals, microscopes to look at living organisms and computers to record and display data.

In Year 8 and above pupils are put in ability sets. The sets are based on the end of topic tests, the end of year examination and the science teacher’s professional judgement. Pupils are taught by specialist teachers in separate science groups for Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

During Year 9 we begin our GCSE courses. This gives us extra time in Years 10 and 11 in which we can pursue work or ideas that will help the students in their A levels. For example we can keep up to date with topical ideas like the Large Hadron Collider, cloning and hydrogen fuel cells

We follow the AQA syllabus for Science and Additional Science. These GCSEs and the enrichment we provide during the GCSE years enables the students to go on to study A levels in Science. As well as the usually written assessments students will also be assessed as to their practical skills. This will take place in normal lessons throughout Years 10 and 11.

Over half the students take one or more science subjects at A level.
