Since its introduction eight years ago, Psychology has grown steadily in popularity and is now one of the biggest options on offer in the VIth Form. Students do a one-year AS course initially and then decide whether to carry on for a second year to complete the A2 course. The majority do carry it through to A2, suggesting that they enjoy the subject and can appreciate the many practical applications that psychological theory has. Students always find something which appeals to them, and the range of topics studied is impressive. It includes eating disorders and abnormality, the importance of childhood experiences, obedience and conformity and the ever-present problems of work life balance and stress management. We even delve into the really big questions which concern all of us, such as the debate surrounding the relative importance of nature and nurture and the role these forces play in shaping who we are and what we become.
